If you're still producing highly polished, agency-style corporate video ads for Instagram Reels and YouTube, you are essentially throwing money into a furnace. Gen Z averages an attention span of 8 seconds, and we skip ads in exactly 1.3 seconds the moment we sense a brand is trying to pitch us a product. The corporate aesthetic is an active repellent.

The Gen Z Formula: Lo-Fi is the New High-Fi

The most successful content on Gen Z feeds is 'lo-fi'—filmed on an iPhone, minimal grading, no heavy production value, and native to the platform's visual language. When a brand's post looks exactly like a friend's organic video, the user's guard stays down. At ZGen Digital, we use the Hook-Value-Loop content framework to drive engagement:

  • The Hook (0-1.5s): Visually or conceptually disrupt the scroll. Avoid generic logos; use text overlays or dynamic action to create immediate curiosity.
  • The Value (1.5s-12s): Offer raw entertainment, a smart life hack, or a relatable truth. Do not pitch. Show the product naturally in use.
  • The Loop (12s-15s): Create a seamless loop where the ending of the video perfectly transitions back into the beginning. This doubles viewer watch time.
