The 8-Second Filter: Capturing and Keeping Gen Z's Attention
Karan
ZGen Growth Core
You've probably heard the myth that Gen Z has the attention span of a goldfish. That is fundamentally incorrect. We don't have a short attention span; we have an incredibly sophisticated attention *filter*. Because we are exposed to thousands of pieces of content daily, we can determine whether a video is worth our time in under two seconds.
Passing the 8-Second Filter
Once a user decides to watch past the first two seconds, you must keep them engaged through high-retention storytelling. Here is our direct-action content playbook:
- Visual pacing: Use dynamic cuts, zoom-ins, and on-screen text overlays every 2-3 seconds to prevent visual fatigue.
- Immediate value delivery: Do not start a video with an intro card or a brand logo. Start in the absolute middle of the action or statement.
- Real-talk delivery: Speak directly to the camera with a conversational, zero-script vibe. Polished, voice-over narrations sound too much like commercials.
